Vinho Verde means “green wine” in Portuguese, but in this case it’s a reference to the youth of the wine rather than the color the wine presents. Vinho Verde is meant to be consumed within a year of bottling. It is a slightly sparkling wine blended from trajadura, loureiro, arinto and azal grape varieties.

Vinho Verde presents a pale golden appearance, with perhaps just a noticeable hint of green. The wine’s body resembles champagne with a slight effervescence. The nose suggests lush tropical fruits of melon and citrus. Also, noticeable hints of honey and honeysuckle are present.

Surprisingly, a dry complex wine tempts the palate. A tingling fruity freshness hits the palate, but a dry refreshing wine leaves a lingering fruity taste in your mouth. This wine is best served well-chilled, and perfectly suits a hot summer afternoon. The quality of the wine is unbeatable considering the price. A definite buy again in my book!

Aveleda, a family owned winery, dated back 300 years to the 17th century. It’s located in the north of Portugal. Aveleda provides housing for the nearly 200 individuals they employ with houses scattered around the vineyard. Today, it’s considered one of the three major wineries in Portugal and the largest producer of Vinho Verde. Aveleda was selected as International Winery of the Year seven times, the most recent in 2007.
